Protein Balls

Hello!! As you all are aware energy balls are my favourite healthy snack. Easy to make, packed with the perfect amount of protein and sweetness and perfect to carry when on the move. My previous versions of Rose & Pistachio energy balls and the Ferrero Rocher Protein Balls are a staple at my home. I however wanted to create something with a latest superfood that I have started using which are hemp seeds. Hence this recipe for Chocolate hemp protein balls!

Hemp Seeds Health Benefits

Hemp seeds are from the non-drug species of cannabis plant, yes the same species from which marijuana is made! However it has only trace amounts of the component in which causes the drug effect of Marijuana. Shelled hemp seeds also known as hemp hearts are high omega 6 (linolenic acid) and omega 3 (alpha-lionlenic acid) essential fatty acids. This is the only source of plant based oil which has the ideal ratio of 3:1 omega 6 : omega 3 fatty aides making it the most ideal heart healthy oil. These are essential good fats needed for the body. Also 25% of it is made up of protein, equating it to the likes of chia seeds and flax seeds. It is also a great source of Vitamin E and minerals. Though it is a plant based source of protein it is a complete source of protein because it contains all the essential amino acids required for the human body.

Hemp seeds have a nutty flavour with very mild bitterness. I usually like to sprinkle it over my breakfast bowl but this time I wanted to add it to my energy balls and make more power packed protein balls. I paired these hemp seeds with chocolate for the ultimate energy and mood boosting snacks. The chocolate powder also helps balance the flavour of the protein powders because vegan protein can be a bit bitter. I used pea protein and rice protein combination as the added protein for these protein balls.

These delicious protein balls also have amazing ingredients like brazil nuts, oats, chia seeds and also the superfood, maca. Maca powder adds another boost of energy into these protein balls as well as the addition of its distinct burnt caramel flavour.

Cacao Butter

Finally the big difference in the protein balls from my previous recipes is that I have used raw cacao butter instead of coconut oil. This makes a big big difference in flavour. It almost feels like you are eating chocolate. Only this is the best and healthiest chocolate ever because it is sugar free and packed with three types of protein! I really love the flavour of these Chocolate hemp protein balls. It is a perfect raw chocolate ball because there is no added effort of tempering it or setting it as you usually need to do so with raw chocolate. You can always make this with coconut oil if you do not have any cacao butter and it will still taste delicious.

Instructions
  1. Soak the dates in hot water for a 5 minutes. Drain and reserve the water for later use. Melt the cacao butter on a low heat to prevent it from going over the temperature of 42C to ensure this is a raw recipe.
  2. Blitz in a food processor the brazil nuts, oats, 1 Tbsp of hemp seeds and chia seeds till they resemble a fine powder. Set aside.
  3. Blitz the dates with the melted cacao butter till it becomes a rough paste. Add the powdered nut and seed mix to this date paste. Add both the protein powders, cocoa powder, maca powder, vanilla powder and salt.
  4. Blitz till well combined. You may need to stop the food processor once or twice and scrape down the sides. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved water and keep processing. If it seems to dry, then add another tablespoon of reserved water. Keep adding water till you feel the texture is binding. Because of the protein powder content it can be drier and you need to make sure that you can roll it into balls. If it becomes too sticky, leave it a while so that the chia absorbs the excess water. After half an hour if it still sticky add either rice protein powder or cocoa powder to the mixture till you are able to make it into balls.
  5. Once the mixture is ready, make small equal sized balls. Roll it in the remaining hemp seed hearts till completely coated. This will be very soft so I suggest you to leave it in the fridge for at least an hour and the texture and flavour will really become good.
  6. This will last for a month in the refrigerator.
